Who can claim?

EU Regulation 261/2004 covers every flight leaving the EU, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland – so every departure from Frankfurt, whatever the airline – and flights into Europe operated by a European airline (Lufthansa, Condor, Eurowings…). A flight from New York to Frankfurt on a US airline is not covered, but the flight from Frankfurt to New York is.

The amount depends on distance: €250 up to 1,500 km, €400 between 1,500 and 3,500 km (and for all longer flights within the EU), €600 beyond. Flights leaving the UK fall under UK261 (£220, £350 or £520).

What counts is the delay on arrival. A cancellation qualifies if you were told less than 14 days before departure. Nothing is owed if the airline proves extraordinary circumstances (dangerous weather, air traffic control, security).

Delays based on the times published by the airport (for departures: expected departure time). Amounts are indicative: only the airline or a court decides.
